Hire Car Classifications
Before you hire a car in the UK it is important that you know how much baggage and how many passengers there will be on your journey. This information will help you choose the correct classification of car to meet your car hire needs.
In general cars available for hire from UK car hire companies fall into one of the five categories, which cover different shapes and sizes of vehicle, from a small two-seater car to a large seven-seat minibus. So make your choice from:
Micro – very small three-door cars, such as a Smart City Coupe, Fiat Sceinto and Volkswagen Lupo, with room for up to two adults and two children and limited space for small bags.
Economy – small three/five-door cars, such as a Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio and Fiat Punto, with limited space for small/medium-sized bags, and room for up to four adults (or two adults and two children).
Standard – medium/large five-door cars, such as a Renault Laguna, Ford Mondeo and Peugeot 406, with space for up to five passengers, and room for a number of small bags or two large suitcases.
People Carrier – large five-door vehicles, such as a Renault Espace, Volkswagen Sharan and Mercede-Benz V-Class, with room for seven passengers and a small number of bags, or five passengers and a number of suitcases or golf bags.
Executive – premium cars, such as Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5-series, which are ideal for business travellers or drivers wanting a taste of luxury on their journey. Executive cars hold a maximum of five passengers and a number of small/medium-sized bags.
